Welcome friends to Episode #142 of the Own Your Best Life Podcast. Whether it’s because mercury is in retrograde or you’ve been burning the midnight oil, sometimes our energy feels off. How do you know if it’s something within your control or whether or not you should just wait it out? Today, I’ll share with you an energy audit practice I personally use to help manage my energy.
The energy audit is a practice that I’ve used for the last several years. It’s what helped me focus on some of the most important changes in my life, from sleep deprivation to sleeping more consistently, waking up at the time that works best for me and being more honest with myself about the areas where I want to do more work.
This process is something I teach my clients and I just taught it for the first time this month. If you want to get in on it, sign up for Spiritual Achiever coaching where you’ll have access to this process.
Energy matters because we tend to think of our main resource as time, when we actually can use energy to do more and experience more in the time we have.
It’s a lever that most of us have not fully accessed. Think about it. When you wake up, you often feel that time is already limited and there’s so much to do. Energetically, however, you can still show up and be a very different person within those next 24 hours that will make or break your day. Our capacity to meet the demands of our life is what will prevent burnout and exhaustion. Energy is a measure of our capacity to do work and produce change.
I want you to consider 4 aspects of your energy: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. These each relate to how much physical energy you have in terms of fuel, or the quality of emotions that you carry, the ability to sustain focus on the most important things and how committed we are to our purpose and vision. When you think about your best self, you are usually operating at the highest levels of all of these energies.
You feel like you can do so much and run the world when your physical energy is high. When you have mostly positive emotional states you are able to be less reactive, moody and impatient with yourself and others. If your mental energy is high, you are on-time and prioritizing what matters most in your life. If your spiritual energy is high, you are regularly living with a level of emotional vulnerability that equates to courage and honoring what you most value.
It is so important for you to see that when you think about any of your goals, whether it is to find more inner peace, wealth or relationships – the way that we go about figuring out how we get there usually has something to do with the amount of energy that we bring to a situation. It is the quality of our thinking in each of these areas that allows us to physically thrive, create emotional resiliency, have the mental stamina to make hard decisions and to stand up for what we believe so that our spiritual purpose is not just within us, but lives outside of us as well.
The Energy Audit
Here are the 4 main components of the energy audit. You’ll want to score yourself on these 4 areas:
- Physical – how full does my physical energy tank feel on a daily basis, with a scale of 1-10 with 10 being mostly full?
- Emotional – how much more do I focus on positive emotions over negative emotions on a daily basis with a scale of 1-10 with 10 being mostly positive?
- Mental – how focused do I feel on the most important things on a daily basis with a scale of 1-10 with 10 being fully focused on the most important things?
- Spiritual – how committed am I to my purpose on a daily basis with a scale of 1-10 with 10 being fully committed to my purpose?
If you’re able to answer 8-10, great job! Keep doing what you’re doing! If you feel like you’re scoring yourself less than that, then there are some simple changes you can make to your rituals and routines to help you get there.
We tend to overwhelm ourselves with change and all the things that have to happen in order for us to feel our best, when in reality we must prioritize once again. I use the prioritization process I teach with my clients when they feel that there’s a lot to do and sometimes they don’t even realize that they’re trying to do everything all at once until I point it out. This is likely why it hasn’t worked before, and it will require you to simplify in a way that is both life-changing and weirdly uncomfortable.
We want to do it all, especially when it comes to improving the things that feel like they’re bringing pain into our lives, but we’re working on long-term solutions, not short-term solutions. We’re making lifestyle changes that you will carry for the rest of your life so it is important to honor that one change so that it sticks with you and you embody it. It’s like riding a bike, once you figure out what tweaks you need to make and you’ve done them successfully, you can easily do it again. The energy audit gives you a starting point and a refreshed look at what simple things to focus on, and then we take it from there to actually become that person that has the wealth, health and time back into your life.
When I began to focus on my physical energy, I realized that moving everyday, regardless of the circumstances, is exactly what I needed to do in addition to fuel and sleep. But I didn’t work on all of these things at the same time. First, it was the fuel. Then it was the movement. Then it was sleep.
All these things are now not a question of whether or not I can have the physical energy at a full tank anymore. I know exactly what needs to be done and how to get back on the bike and I have full belief that it works. This is what we need to do to sustain change. It’s also what can happen when you do a real audit of your life in a specific area and make the changes that finally stick as a lifestyle.
