249: Why Scrolling LinkedIn Jobs Makes You More Confused, Not Less

Leadership

Welcome to Episode #249 of the Own Your Best Life Podcast

If you’ve spent any time lately scrolling through LinkedIn looking for your next career move, I want to ask you a question: do you actually feel closer to finding your next step? Or do you just feel deeply confused, slightly anxious, and completely overwhelmed?

You open the app looking for clarity. Instead, you see a flood of job titles you don’t understand, content creators telling you to rewrite your resume for the fifth time, and job posts with “400 applicants” before breakfast. You leave feeling less sure of what your “thing” is than when you logged on.

Today, we need to talk about why LinkedIn is designed to keep you confused, and why figuring out what’s next doesn’t happen inside a search filter. It happens when you discover your Edge.

Maybe you’re here because you’re hating your job and wanting to quit. Maybe you’ve just left and the panic is setting in. Or maybe you’re on LinkedIn trying to figure out your next move because you know you need a plan in case what you’re doing now doesn’t last forever.

We also know that LinkedIn is where professionals live online. Fortune 100 giants, Fortune 500 giants, early-stage startups, and the small businesses with only a handful of employees are all on there posting roles. More than 58 million companies now have a presence on the platform, and recruiters treat it as home base. In fact, 87% of recruiters call LinkedIn the most effective place to evaluate candidates. The giants are there, the startups are there, and so are the tiny teams. Everyone who is hiring is on LinkedIn, which is exactly why it feels like the place you are supposed to be.

So what do you do? Stay unfulfilled and without a clear option forever? Or get honest about the traps that are keeping you stuck, find your Superpower Edge, and cut through the noise? I’d recommend the second one, which is where we’re starting today.

LinkedIn is a tech platform built to maximize your screen time, just like every other social media app. It was not built to create the roadmap for your unique life and career. It doesn’t know your history, your context, or your ambitions. It doesn’t know your potential or your areas of real strength. It doesn’t know how to build a compelling, authentic, empowering narrative out of everything you’ve already done.

When you don’t know what your “thing” is, LinkedIn becomes a giant mirror of everyone else’s career highlights. It makes you compare your messy internal transition to everyone else’s polished external brand. It’s an overload trap, which is why I hear this all the time: people feel terrible about themselves on LinkedIn. They don’t want to post or even open the app, but they know they can’t stay buried in their work and ignore it forever.

Getting that “Top 10%” notification from LinkedIn is like a casino host calling you a VIP to keep you anchored to the table. It’s an engagement trap designed to make you feel accomplished enough to keep paying for Premium. But behind the scenes, the recruiter is not seeing a VIP. They’re looking at a cold spreadsheet, clicking buttons to filter out everyone who lives in the wrong zip code or doesn’t have a specific competitor on their resume.

This is why chasing that badge by rewriting your resume for the ninth time is a losing game. You’re trying to shrink yourself into a robotic box. When you discover your Edge, you stop playing the algorithm’s game. You bypass the dashboard entirely and start connecting directly with the human beings who actually have the power to say yes.

So what do we do when we realize the system is rigged? Most of us fall into what I call the LinkedIn Scroll Trap. You know exactly what this looks like, because you’ve done it. It’s 11:00 PM. You’re lying in bed, staring at the blue glow of your phone. You open LinkedIn, type in a vague job title, and start scrolling. You swipe past an “Easy Apply” button and click it. Dopamine hit. “I’m doing it, I’m job hunting.” Then you scroll further. You see a post from an old coworker who just got promoted to Vice President. Your stomach drops. You keep scrolling. You see a job that looks interesting, but it wants eight years of experience in a software you’ve never heard of. You feel unqualified. You close the app, roll over, and go to sleep more exhausted, more behind, and more confused than you were an hour ago.

The scroll trap is toxic to your career because it forces you to react to other people’s scripts. Every job description is just a company’s wish list. Every status update is someone else’s highlight reel. When you sit in that scroll trap without knowing what your “thing” is, you let an algorithm dictate your self-worth. You shape-shift your resume and your identity to fit whatever random box happens to pop up next. You’re looking out there for an answer that can only be found in here. It’s that square-peg-round-hole feeling that has you thinking, wait, I’ve done this so many times in my career, and I don’t want to keep putting on jobs like clothes that don’t fit. Why do I have to fight this hard to work?

And that brings us to the turning point. If you want to break out of the algorithmic casino, if you want to end the late-night scrolling anxiety, you have to stop trying to fit into their boxes and start building your own. You don’t need a better LinkedIn strategy. You need to know your Edge.

Your Edge is the exact intersection of your unique, uncopyable skills and the specific problem you solve better than anyone else. When you know your Edge, the whole script flips. You don’t open LinkedIn to see who will take you. You open LinkedIn to see who needs you. Let me break down how we find it.

First, we figure out your unique strengths. These are the productive, positive talents and gifts you carry in a blend that belongs only to you. This is how we understand what makes you different, and how to position you and your brand to your advantage while staying authentic to who you actually are.

Second, we look at what motivates you and why, so we can predict, not guess, whether your next move will have you running for the door in a year or finally feeling like yourself again.

Then we get clear on your preferences, so we know how you work best, the kind of people you work best with, and the environments that suit you most easily. This matters because we can get so locked into our own way of doing things that we stop appreciating how other people work and communicate. Understanding this helps you bridge that gap, lead teams well, influence others, and find the environments that fit you. It also keeps you from being scared of working with people who are different from you, or in environments that stretch what feels easy. Both are worth understanding.

The next time you find yourself at 11:00 PM, trapped in that blue-light LinkedIn scroll, I want you to notice how your body feels. Notice the slight spike of anxiety. Notice the creeping doubt. And in that exact moment, close the app.

Remember, you cannot find your Edge by staring at a robotic feed built to keep you confused. The answer to “what’s next” is not buried in a sea of generic job descriptions. It starts when you step off the algorithmic treadmill, tune out the noise, and get crystal clear on what your true “thing” really is.

If you’re ready to stop passively reacting to the market and finally take control of your career, let’s do this together. Drop the endless applications and let’s map out your actual Edge.
