Welcome to Episode #244 of the Own Your Best Life Podcast
I want to talk about your zone of genius, and why it was never a job title.
Here’s the trap I see so many accomplished people fall into. They decide their zone of genius lives inside a job. And the moment they do that, their entire happiness and fulfillment becomes a job too. Their sense of whether they’re okay rises and falls with their work. That is a really fragile way to live.
Because here’s the truth. Your zone of genius isn’t a role. It’s a way you show up in the world. It’s the thing you do so naturally you barely notice it. And once you see it that way, the question changes. It stops being “what role do I want,” and it becomes “what’s the work only I can do,” and then, “where is that valuable?”
The lopsided life
That’s a completely different energy. When your zone of genius is a job, you get these lopsided lives where all you do is work.
And I want to name something, because this is so important. A lot of the time, the reason you’re unhappy isn’t that you hate your job. It’s that the job is taking up too much of your life, and you have no room to express your zone of genius anywhere else. Not in your health. Not in your relationships. Not in your fun. So the work expands, and everything else quietly shrinks.
When you start to find your joy, happiness, and fulfillment only in a job, things get messy fast.
My story
I lived this. For a long time I believed that until I could figure out my work, I couldn’t be happy in my personal life. Because so much of who I was lived in my work.
And then I realized something. Part of my frustration at work was that it was eating up so much of my life that it started to bleed into how I showed up at home. It wasn’t just that I felt like I was struggling at work. The struggle was following me everywhere.
So I did something different. Instead of waiting for my work to get fixed before I let myself be happy, I started cleaning up my habits, my identity, who I was at home and in my personal life. And that gave me the confidence to do the same thing in my work.
Because it was the same zone of genius the whole time. I just didn’t have a name for it yet.
People used to say it to me. “You’re so good at figuring out why someone is doing what they’re doing.” I’d hear it even when I was already good at the actual work I was hired for, but that comment was pointing at something underneath the work. And here’s what’s important: I didn’t know that was a skill you could build a career around. I didn’t know there was an entire body of work behind it. So I couldn’t use it on purpose, because I didn’t even know I had it.
That’s what changed everything. I named it. I realized this was a real thing, that it was my zone of genius. And the moment I named it, I could start using it on purpose. I built the skill around it. I got more aware of it. And then I started applying it everywhere, in my own relationships, with my kids, helping them through hard things and setting them up for a life where I know they’ll be okay even if I’m not here.
It became an identity, and it infiltrated how I lived my entire life. It didn’t become my job right away. I was still figuring out where it belonged. But the order matters: the awareness came first, then the skill, then the application.
The order that actually works
Awareness, skill, application. Name the gift, build the skill, apply it everywhere.
The internal pull comes first. You notice what you’re endlessly interested in, you pay attention to what people keep reflecting back to you, and you trust that there’s a reason for it. If I think like this, if I’m this drawn to these topics, if people keep telling me I’m good at this one thing, there must be something here. And then we go find where it shows up.
That’s how you stop letting the tail wag the dog. The job doesn’t define your genius. Your genius finds its way into the right jobs.
How I actually find it: your Superpower Edge™
Here’s the problem with how most people talk about your zone of genius. They treat it like something you just stumble into one day, or feel your way toward. I waited years to name mine. You shouldn’t have to.
So I built an actual process for finding it, and I call it your Superpower Edge™. It’s the place where three things meet: your strengths, your motivators, and your personality.
Your strengths are your tools. What you do well, and how to apply those traits productively in the world.
Your motivators are your fuel. They show you how fulfilled you’ll actually feel across the different paths you’re weighing, so you’re not just guessing whether your next step will make you happy.
Your personality is your fit. It points you toward the environments and roles that suit your natural style, so you can stop swimming upstream in places that were never built for you.
Triangulate those three, and you find your edge. The work only you can do, in the kind of place you’re built for, that actually lights you up. Strengths give you the what. Motivators give you the why. Personality gives you the where. The magic is in the overlap.
This isn’t me guessing about you. It’s three established frameworks, brought together into one clear picture of who you are and where you belong. That’s your Superpower Edge™.
Genius needs skill
Here’s the part people miss, because I’m not just talking about spiritual knowing. Your zone of genius often needs new skills to fully come out. The skills of leadership. Of communication. Of managing your time. Of owning your message and your style. Of becoming someone who’s in integrity, where what you say and what you do match, so you can actually accomplish the goals you set for yourself.
That’s a huge part of what we do in coaching. We take the inner knowing, the “this is who I am,” and we add the strategy and the skill to amp it up and make it real. We take it out of just confidence and into practical application. Iteration. Action. Getting you moving so you can see it in a tangible form.
Because the goal isn’t for you to struggle harder trying to be someone you’re not, chasing success like it lives somewhere out there. The goal is the opposite. Success becomes you being more you. More aware of who you are. And then growing the skills to translate that into work that’s well paid, recognized, and genuinely yours.
The whole life rises together
When you do this, your life stops being lopsided. Your work gets better because your health and your relationships and your fun are getting better at the same time. We clean it up energetically so you understand the purpose of the work, it’s meaningful, it’s in your zone of genius, and every other area of your life is growing right alongside it. Instead of your health and relationships declining while only your job improves, the whole thing rises together.
That’s the inner compass. Your zone of genius is your inner compass, and your Superpower Edge™ is how we find it.
And in Spiritual Achiever® Coaching, that’s exactly what we do. We triangulate your strengths, your motivators, and your personality so you walk out feeling more sure, more settled, more at peace in your body. Getting closer and closer to something that just feels right. You don’t have to struggle so hard trying to be someone you’re not, and you don’t have to wait years to name your edge the way I did.
This is the work, and there is so much more coming your way over the next few weeks, so stay close. I’m building toward something that’s going to help you find your own Superpower Edge™ and think this all the way through, into your next chapter.
