159: 10xing Your Results

Energy

Welcome to episode #159 of the Own Your Best Life Podcast. If you’ve ever felt like things were going too slow and that you’re impatient for your results, this episode is for you. When you’ve been working on the same thing for a while, it’s normal to feel like it’s taking too long. How can we get more and better results in less time? We’re going to cover this in today’s episode on 10xing your results.

Resistance

We humans don’t love feeling uncomfortable. Whenever we have a desire and a gap between what we have and what we want, there is resistance to the fact that there is even a gap. Especially as an achiever, we often feel like every day starts off at zero and we are working to win the day. We want to close gaps as fast as possible.

When we resist what is actually happening and how achieving your result of confidence, health, relationships and a new job is taking longer than we expect, things feel heavier. In order to get more and better results, we have to reduce the time/energy we spend wishing things weren’t the way they were and use that time and energy to surrender to the fact that they are this way. When we do that, we’re able to quickly see the root of the problem, what’s causing it and brainstorm ideas for addressing it.

There will always be a gap. If you’re pushing the envelope, it’s not if you’ll miss your timelines, it’s when. Be prepared for that reality and you’ll realize that your time and energy is better spent on the process of achieving instead of resisting all the problems that pop up daily.

If stress is weighing you down, this is an indication of a pattern of resisting reality. Reality always wins. Start with seeing all the ways you resist what is happening right now, and you’ll find energy and time that could be used towards closing the gap between you and what you desire, faster.

Creativity

Finding the 10x solution isn’t about doing things 10x faster. It’s usually by removing 10x worth of work. This is a nuance but an important one. If you were to try to do the same process faster, you’ll get tired and likely make mistakes. You’ll burn out and want to stop. If you remove steps from the process and go to the source of what would give you the best results, more quickly – you’ll find that you can go further, faster and for longer.

We often don’t go this route of going straight to the source because it requires creativity. It requires us to create a new process and be able to put our work, lives and the way we do things in front of others for scrutiny. We have to let other people help us open our eyes to things we’ve never seen before. We have to be able to detach ourselves and our ego from what we’re trying to accomplish and just say to ourselves, “what would I do if I really wanted 10x of this result?”

When you do this exercise, you’ll find that you might not be willing to go forward with the plan and the work that would be required to get to where you want to go in 10x less time or with 10x less energy or resources. That is a choice, but you at least have the ability to see that you’re not willing to do the 10x version. If you are willing, however, to be more creative, you’ll find that it requires courage and relentless effort.

Courage

When we don’t want to do something because we’re scared or fearful, we do it anyway – this is courage. Intelligence is being able to identify risks and decide which of these risks are calculated moves you want to make. You will have opportunities at every juncture to take risks. To say that this isn’t what you thought it would be. To say that you want to do it differently. To say something feels off even if you’re not sure what it is. To do something that feels like you’re at your edge of comfort – leading, investing, putting yourself into place where the real work is being done.

These kinds of questions, responses and behaviors are more closely related to creating success than we might believe. It takes interrogation of our reality to be able to find a solution that is 10x faster or more effective. You might have to not do things the way you’ve always done them. You have to be willing to say that you haven’t done what you’ve wanted to do and change that fact. You may disappoint people who want different feedback from you. You may have to decide that you belong in this place with these people, now. All of this requires courage.

If you feel like you’re putting yourself out there at the edge of your comfort and there’s a bit of fear and vulnerability – a feeling like you want to be swallowed up by the earth – you’re likely in the right place. You are pushing the boundaries of what you’re used to and because you do that, you’re going to break some of the infrastructure of how you’ve always done things. When you break that down, you have the opportunity to build something new in its place; a process or way of working and living that gives you 10x of whatever it is you’ve had up to this point. Courage has rewards. Don’t forget that there is a reason you’re doing this and the reason is because of the 10x results you’ll achieve because you’re willing to forgo comfort for freedom.

Relentlessness

What if this was going to be more work than you thought you would have to take on? What if you were going to get 10x your results, but you would have to show up with more energy and be more consistent in your courage? This is relentlessness. When you’re a parent, there is no relenting of your duties. Every single day you have to care for your kids – for years.

The things we want in our lives are ranked in priority order. Within that priority order, you will assign to it the level of relentlessness you want to give it. Family as an example, is often the most important so you are willing to show up rain or shine even when you don’t want to. If you give even half of that willingness to your next most important desire – a desire to have better health, relationships or career – you will see that there’s another world of possibility that is available to you.

It’s likely that today, you’re operating at an engagement level that is less than optimal. Some days you feel committed. Other days you feel like giving up. This cycle may be persistent. Within our cycling in and out of our commitment, our relentless nature wanes. Within that up and down, in and out is the 10x you’re desiring to see. If you were a force to be reckoned with, you would be able to drive right into the success you desire and claim it as yours. No wondering if you’re deserving or wishing you had more resources. You would just go in and get it done with what you have or go get more things to do what you need to do. Without complaining or resentment. Why? Because you’ve given up the resistance we already discussed.

Yet, relentlessness isn’t burning yourself out. It’s about a calm and collected approach to knowing that you have committed yourself to this result. It’s not if you’re going to achieve it – it’s when. As a result of that level of inevitability, you start taking action sooner rather than later. You’re going to have to do it anyway because you’re committed, so why not get it out of the way sooner. Relentlessness will look like wanting to be fully awake and operating at your highest capacity. It’s not perfection but it is a desire to be engaged in whatever it is that you’re doing, fully.

Once you’re able to be that unstoppable relentless force, you know that no matter what you feel like, you’ll still show up. The same way you show up for your family and friends, you’ll show up for yourself for these results.

In summary, 10xing your results is a clear, eyes-wide-open approach to seeing your current situation without resistance, being creative in breaking down the ways of working that are taking 10x more effort/time, having the courage to be uncomfortable and let yourself be challenged, while also holding a relentlessness because you’ve made the decision to commit to this result.

No more questioning if this is for you or not. It is. Now it’s time to cut through all the barriers that keep you from going straight to what it is you want. It’s time to 10x what you want and you’re ready.
