149: 4 Signs You’re Ready for What’s Next

Mindset

Welcome friends to Episode #149 of the Own Your Best Life Podcast. When you’re ready for what’s next, you’ve often come out of hiding or are finally coming up for air long enough from all the to-do’s in life to see that things have changed. While you’ve been parenting, working and being a human – the world has changed and so have you. Maybe you have new priorities. Maybe you are noticing new opportunities that seem interesting. Maybe you see that something just doesn’t quite feel right. Either way, today I’m going to break down the 4 ways to know you’re ready for what’s next.

You can’t stop thinking about what’s next

If you can’t stop thinking about that question, “what’s next?” – it is usually because you’re either bored or overwhelmed. When we’re in a state of boredom, life has become comfortable but also perhaps a bit stale. This is usually when you’re looking for a challenge or some new energy to be infused in your life.

When you’re overwhelmed, you’ll also be thinking about what’s next. Why?  Because you feel like it’s unsustainable. You see that maybe you’re committed to doing something for the next year or 6 months, but you can’t see yourself in the same job or in the same position you are in now with your health or wealth for the foreseeable future.

You keep asking other people if they’re happy

The next sign is that you are looking around at other people’s lives to see if they’ve somehow figured it out and you haven’t. You might even ask other people if they’re happy or if they’re feeling bored or overwhelmed like you. You ask them if they want more or have the same desires as you to do something different with their life or career. Whether or not you’re having a conversation out loud you begin to have conversations in your head. It’s like doing market research on whether or not this is actually something people do. Do people like you actually make these kinds of changes? Instead of being mired in your day to day you start looking around and getting a pulse on what else is going on in people’s heads. When you start thinking about making a change, you start thinking about other people’s opinions.

You wonder if “this is all there is and I should be grateful”

What often happens when you start looking around is this next sign. The third sign is that even if you do start thinking about wanting something more, you notice that you feel guilty. You use comparison to others who are less fortunate as a way to see why you’re not supposed to rock the boat and take that next leap.

You think “maybe this is all there is and I should be grateful”. There’s a lot of people in that camp who question what they want next because of a worry that this means that they’re not grateful for what they have. You worry that even by thinking about what’s next, people or the Universe will find out and you will be punished and lose what you have. This is where the guilt creeps in. You’re not used to feeling guilty though and eventually you start to answer that question of “is this all there is?” with answers like, “no, it’s not.” This is what leads you to the 4th sign that you’re ready for what’s next.

You think “there must be a better way”

The fourth sign is that you start to think there must be a better way. A better way to parent or work. A better way to live and have relationships. You start to see that it has nothing to do with gratitude for what you have in your life. It’s a sign of growth or evolution. You see it as natural and that the reason you’re asking these questions is because you are ready for the answers.

Many times we think that if we start down the path of questioning our lives, we can’t ever go back. Yet, the question is just a question. Maybe there isn’t a better way. Maybe there is. If you’re asking the question, you’ll likely find an answer though. Those who tend to desire to examine their lives a bit more closely are those that generally aren’t afraid to ask those questions. You might even feel a sense of excitement about the possibilities of what’s in store, even if you don’t know the answer to exactly what is next. You just know that there’s a better way of living and that gives you hope, belief and courage to ask that next question… ”what is next?”
