148: My Unconventional Decision-Making Secrets

Mindset

Welcome friends to Episode #148 of the Own Your Best Life Podcast. I’ve had some big successes and changes in how I’ve made decisions that have led me to a life where I do work that I get paid to do and love, have deeper relationships and a connection with my inner voice and intuition that has only gotten stronger over time. I wanted to share it with you today because I know so many people struggle with how to make decisions and listen to their intuition. Today’s podcast is on this topic of my unconventional decision making secrets that have served me well as I navigate a life of practical responsibilities and living a life where I feel a sense of edge, adventure and aliveness.

There are two principles that have guided my decision making and as I see more of you struggle with decision making, I wanted to share this with you so that you can understand how I think differently and why I seem to be happy with my decisions while also having successful results.

There are no right or wrong decisions

The first thing I think about that is unconventional is that there are no right or wrong decisions. I remember that I was helping someone try to solve a decision making conundrum and as she was going back and forth through the decision misery, I saw that she thought there was a “right” answer. This became a pattern I noticed. This idea of right and wrong. That there is ONE way to do something and only ONE way.

What I know to be true is that there were many decisions I made that seemed right or wrong at the time but life showed me differently. Things that seemed to be terrible decisions were actually good decisions because they led me down a path that I don’t regret. The reason this works is because I think more about what I want to learn through a decision. I think more about what my period of growth is right now and how that relates to the decision I’m trying to make. When you think about the age-old question of what do I want to do with my life next – or where do I want to go with my career – this is all about the question of “how do I want to spend my time?” and “what do I want to learn?” I really notice if I’m not learning anything from a decision. If I’m not, then it really doesn’t matter what I choose.

Yet, if I notice that there are different things I will learn about myself, the world or the people around me through a decision, I’ll contemplate that. I’ve often had to get to that level of specificity and ask the question, “what do I want to learn here?” I remember as I was thinking about creating a group program when I was selling out my private coaching, I wanted to learn more about creating group spaces where more people could have access to the life-changing tools that would help them figure out what’s next and how to achieve sustainably. I saw that there were a lot of people who wanted to make the most of their time on this planet and if I wanted to learn how to serve them, I’d have to learn how to create bigger group spaces for more people.

The same thing happened when I was deciding about the retreats and the timing. I had a retreat come up that I hadn’t originally planned in my meditation. Since I am on a journey of learning what it looks like to follow my intuition so I did. Part of this decision-making process is to learn who you are as you make decisions. Are you someone who trusts themself? Are you someone who figures out how to make things work no matter what? Are you someone who needs to do something different than you’ve done before? We often make decisions based on automatic behaviors and what we’ve always done. Asking yourself if this decision-making process still works for the stage of life you’re in now is what will help you create a life based on where you’re heading and who you are on your way there.

Decisions will be revealed

I think that it’s ok to not know the answer immediately to a decision. I also think it’s ok to know that new decisions will be revealed.

When we’re not in the present moment, we often try to anticipate the multitude of decisions we have to make before we have to make them. While there is a specific meditation and exercises I use to help anticipate obstacles and risks, I also know that there are more decisions that you will encounter than you need to make right now.

Do you know enough to make the first decision? That’s often all we need. Unless you’re making a decision that you cannot come back from – which I find to rarely be the case – you will know enough to make the first decision. You may not know enough to make the next decision, but you don’t need to know that right now. Think about falling in love with someone and creating a relationship with someone new. You often just need to know enough about how you feel about the current situation. Do you like this person as much as you could right now? How would you know if you’ll continue to enjoy their company until you meet them again and again? Each time, staying in the present moment until it becomes obvious that you really do want to spend more and more time together even in the future.

I like to let decisions be enough. To have space for you to match up to that person who made that first decision. To evaluate it and notice what changed for you when you made that decision. To start to understand your own decision-making process and patterns. This is how you develop your intuition and trust in your decisions. By charting them out and seeing what occurred when you made decisions, noticing how you came to that decision. Did you just know? Did you feel it in your gut? Did you hear a sound or a voice say something? Did you see a picture? Did you feel a variety of emotions and thoughts? If so, what were they?

Do not think you don’t have enough information to make a decision. Realize that you might not have enough information to make a decision that you don’t need to make, right now. Let life catch up to you and you’ll find that at the time you need to make a decision, you’ll know enough at that point.
