239: How to Get Clear on What You Want Next

Leadership

Welcome to Episode #239 of the Own Your Best Life Podcast

If you’re feeling tired, successful, capable and still unclear on what’s next, this is for you.

I’m in a season where live facilitation, training and coaching are maxing out my schedule. And at the same time, I still need to think strategically. I still need to plan for what’s next. I still need to create new things to solve new problems.

New circumstances require new strategies.

And honestly, I don’t want to stop taking the actions on my to-do list any more than I want to shut down all the tabs on my computer and restart every night. But sometimes, that’s exactly what’s needed.

Clarity doesn’t come from thinking harder or working more hours.
It comes from increasing our capacity to be in a new situation, especially when our jobs or lives have changed.

It also means increasing how much uncertainty we are willing to hold so we can be honest about what our reality actually looks like right now.

A lot of us struggle to be honest because we don’t want to admit that things are harder than we thought they would be. We don’t want to complain. We don’t want to sound ungrateful. We have been taught to override how we feel so we can just stick to the plan.

And that works, until it doesn’t.

When you are not clear about what you are doing in your work or your life, taking more action starts to feel pointless. So instead of trying new things, we freeze. We stay in the status quo.

I remember a time when I was working an intense job, had small kids, and was also learning an entirely new skill by going back to school. I realized that this exhaustion was different from burnout caused by misalignment.

I stopped telling myself that I should not be doing this or that I needed to figure out my calling right now. Instead, I focused on building strategies to perform at a high level without burning out.

At one point, my doctor asked me about my sleep and stress. And I told him this was not the same kind of tired I used to be.

I was not chronic-stress tired.
I was happy-tired. Glad-tired. Working-on-my-purpose tired.

Even in my corporate work, I wanted to keep learning so I could help more people. Figuring out how to do more with limited time and energy felt like a higher-quality problem to solve.

What I did not do was force myself to quit my job or pick a new career just to feel certain.

I had to be okay not knowing what my gifts were while figuring them out.
I had to be okay not knowing how I would make money while working on the finances.
I had to be okay not knowing how good I would be while learning new skills and getting better.

That is why capacity matters.

Capacity to be honest about where you are, without sugarcoating it and without making it worse.

So if you are exhausted and unclear, I want to offer this. Remove the pressure.

Instead of asking, “What should I do?”
Ask questions you already know the answers to today.

What gives me energy?
What drains me?
What am I no longer available for?
What am I curious about?

Pressure tells us there is only one path to success or safety. One kind of job that pays the bills. One way to feel fulfilled.

That is not true.

There are infinite ways to make money. Infinite ways to contribute. Infinite ways to feel proud of what you are creating.

If you feel like you are forcing yourself to hurry up, question that.

I would not be doing the work I do today, or have made the changes I have made in my health, marriage, finances and community, without learning how to stay present in the figuring-it-out phase.

Confusion while learning something new almost always comes before real creation.

And when you do not rush it, what you build feels honest. Alive. Sustainable.
